Irene joined the Luwero program in 2018 and has been in it ever since — long enough that the field office has watched her come up through the grades. She has just finished P.4 and been promoted to P.5.
Her mother heads a household of ten and farms to feed them, which leaves very little for school fees, uniforms, and books. What Irene has going for her is that she keeps showing up: 90% attendance across a full year, in a place where children are often pulled out of class to work.
A sponsor covers her school costs so that the next promotion doesn’t depend on the harvest.
